Michigan Sports Betting

Michigan is now a full-service sports betting state. By virtue of a 2019 law, both online and retail sports betting became legal practices in the Great Lake State. Online sports betting was launched in Michigan January 22, 2021.

So, here are all the details about what’s going on with sports betting in Michigan. If you are new to Michigan sports betting or simply the act of wagering on sports itself, you’re in the right place.

Sports betting launch dates in Michigan

In most cases, sports betting operations do not begin the second that sports betting becomes legal. There is usually a delay of at least a few months, and in this regard, Michigan was no different. Legislation was passed in December of 2019, retail sports betting started in March of 2020 and online sports books officially launched January 22, 2021.

Online sportsbooks were working around the clock to begin accepting Michigan customers as soon as possible. Bettors can rejoice knowing they now have nearly a dozen well known sportsbooks ready to take their online bets.

In addition to online sports betting, retail sports betting is also up and running. Detroit residents can visit downtown in order to place wagers at the following locations:

MGM Grand Detroit

By virtue of the 2019 law, Michigan’s tribal casinos can now open their own locations. It’s unclear which of the 23 venues will ultimately welcome a sportsbook, but many of them will.

So far, the only announced and expected sportsbook openings are at the following casinos:

  • Turtle Creek Casino – expected to open Summer 2020
  • Leelanau Sands Casino & Lodge – expected to open Summer 2020

However, as time passes, we will update the list of casinos that have both opened their sportsbooks and expect to open their books.

DraftKings in Michigan

draftkings sportsbook michiganDraftKings has developed a very appealing sports betting app. For starters, it has compelling offers for its sports bettors such as flash bets and great odds and payment options.

Flash bets are a unique live betting opportunity that allows bettors the use of in-game wagers between points for a given match. DraftKings also usually has sign-up bonuses to attract new users that change depending on location. For its customers, it has some of the best bonus offers, such as odds boosts for its daily games, an insurance feature on parlays and other benefits that can be found at any time on its site.

Looking at DraftKings’ app, you will notice that it is of high quality and functionality to provide users with a solid sports betting experience. If you prefer to use the website on a desktop computer, it still offers the same reliability and easy-to-use platform as the app.

DraftKings is a trusted brand for its sports offerings and payment methods, so you do not have to worry about personal information getting out or any major issues.

DraftKings tries to be the first to have odds listed for upcoming sporting events. It also tends to provide some of the better odds and options when compared to other major sportsbooks.

FOX Bet in Michigan

fox bet sportsbook michiganThe FOX Bet name may appear familiar. It is owned by the same FOX Corp. that also broadcasts sports throughout the US. FOX Bet’s sportsbook is legal and operating in multiple US states, with more states to come.

Back in May 2019, FOX joined forces with The Stars Group, a huge gaming company that has since merged into Flutter Entertainment, to launch FOX Bet.

You will find that FOX Bet has a huge variety of sports to bet on. For each sport, you will also find just about every option out there for placing a bet.

If you are on your mobile device, the sportsbook’s website will prompt you to download the FOX Bet app if you do not have an account. While on the desktop version, you can still sign up on the website and then can simply download the app at any time.

FOX Bet has a large variety of deposit options. These include the likes of fan favorites such as PayPal and online banking. Some bettors might like to use a credit or debit card, which is also an option. Another cool feature is that PokerStars is part of the partnership with FOX Bet, so you have the option to deposit with your PokerStars Play+ card.

For withdrawal methods, you will find that there are almost as many options available. These options include PayPal, at the cage in some locations and again to your PokerStars Play+ card.

There are other features that FOX Bet incorporates that help to set it apart from the market. Below are three options:

Bet Boosts: As the name suggests, Bet Boosts offer you increased lines on select events every day. This also gives you the chance to win even more money than you would have received otherwise. Some of these boosts will be given by select FOX Sports personalities, such as Colin Cowherd, Clay Travis and others.

Super Boosts: Super Boosts are arguably the largest bet boosts of the week, offering even more of an advantage if you do them often and win.

Custom bets: By tweeting using the hashtag #CustomBet, you may find your homemade proposition bet available on the FOX Bet site.

PointsBet Michigan

pointsbet michiganFirst-time and recurring users can find a lot to like at PointsBet, even though the amount of content can be overwhelming. Indeed, it carries all of the standard types of traditional team and player prop bets, as well as the usual bets like spreads, totals, moneylines and many more.

This selection of bets is a positive for PointsBet. It also has what is called PointsBetting, and this could be a game-changer.

PointsBetting is like a golden egg for PointsBet. PointsBetting is great for bettors that want to try something new or even test the waters because no other sportsbook offers this.

PointsBetting will take a spread, total or prop bet, and then turn it into a variable type of bet that will last the entirety of the event. In this scenario, the more correct you are at your bet, the more money you will win. However, you can also lose a lot of money this way.

Bettors have the opportunity to place wagers on a variety of sports. This even includes the likes of international leagues that are available, which means you have the option to place wagers on anything from the NBA to the Swedish Hockey League.

PointsBet keeps updates on its betting board regularly, which allows you to be able to wager on certain seasonal events like the NBA trade deadline and the MLB Home Run Derby.

PointsBet is the only sportsbook out there so far to offer its own branded Mastercard. It has a handful of other payment methods for deposits and withdrawals, including ACH (e-check) or a different debit/credit card. PayPal has recently been added in since most people love this option.

PointsBet offers a nice, functioning app on iOS and Android devices. It shows a handful of pages, such as the terms and conditions, and does not take long to load. Navigating through it appears to be just fine, and the desktop version is about the same.

PointsBet has a section that educates users. The PointsBet Pulse, PointsBet’s blog, shows users educational content, videos and betting articles that cover popular sports such as football and basketball.

This feature alone is excellent in its own right. PointsBet does a nice job of explaining to bettors the process of PointsBetting, showing examples of other bets, and even educational videos that feature popular sports players.

How will online sports betting work?

With all of the major online sportsbooks are now live in Michigan, here is what you can expect when you decide you want to bet online.

Downloading a sportsbook app

Your first step will be to download the app to your device. The good news is that the procedure for downloading a sportsbook app is largely the same as the step you take for other apps.

Regardless of the platform that you use (iOS or Android), you should follow the link to your desired sportsbook that we have listed above. This link will take you straight to the download page for the sportsbook you want AND it will activate a bonus for you.

iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch

Once you’re on the download page, click the appropriate button for Apple users. It will take you straight to where the file is kept.

The file page for Apple customers should be quite familiar. By and large, there is no difference in downloading a sportsbook app to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch than there is any other type of app.

Simply click the button on the page that says “GET” to begin the download. You may have to confirm that you approve the installation, but it should take no more than a few seconds.

Android

Android customers need to perform one step before they press the button with the Android logo on it. They need to tell their devices to accept downloads from unknown sources.

This task is accomplished by looking under the Security header in your phone’s Settings menu. There should be an option to allow unknown sources to download and install.

Afterwards, you should press the Android logo button to reach the repository for the sportsbook’s .apk file. Downloading should proceed normally, although you may have to confirm that you accept the download from a non-Google Play Store source.

Registering on a sportsbook app

Once you’ve completed the download and installation, you need to begin the registration process. Look for a prominently-displayed button in the upper right portion of the display to begin – it will have words like “Sign Up,” “Register,” or “Join” written on it.

After pressing the button, the sportsbook app will take you to its registration page or pages. There will be several blanks that require you to fill out your personal information.

Be prepared to give the following information to the sportsbook:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • Street address
  • Social Security number (or last four digits)

The registration page will also direct you to enter a username and password. Make sure that you choose secure options for these two items, as your financial information will likely be stored within your account. Do not share your username and password with anyone else.

There may also be a few verification and security questions that you must answer. You may be required to choose various personal questions and provide the answers to them as an added layer of security. Like your username and password, keep the answers to these questions safe.

Finally, you may have the opportunity to enter a bonus or promotional code as you register. Make sure to check with MichSportsbooks.com for these – if there are any active promotions, we will be sure to let you know.

Once you’ve filled in all the boxes, press Submit, and you’re all set.

Depositing on a sportsbook app

In many cases, the sportsbook app will automatically take you directly from registration to the cashier to make your first deposit. Obviously, it’s in the book’s best interest to have you begin wagering as soon as possible.

However, don’t feel like you have to make a deposit to proceed. Look for an X in the top left or right corner of the page to exit the cashier and enter the lobby.

At any rate, once you’re ready to make that first deposit, look for a button that either says “Deposit” or “Cashier.” The page will have several different methods that you can use to proceed with your transaction.

Common deposit methods include:

  • Debit or credit cards
  • Electronic checks (ACH)
  • Electronic wallets (PayPal, Skrill, etc.)
  • Bank or wire transfers
  • Prepaid cards
  • Cash (PayNearMe, retail locations)

After you select your method and fill out your information, follow the instructions onscreen to make your first entry. There might be a verification procedure or two.

Lastly, make sure to check MICHSportsbooks for any bonus or promotional codes we may have. There should be a box to enter a code on most deposit screens.

Many of our deals are exclusive and cannot be found elsewhere. Don’t miss out, especially on that first deposit.

Playing on a sportsbook app in Michigan

Online sportsbook operators are always in heated competition with one another. Since it only takes a few button presses for your money to go elsewhere, they each have to strive to keep you loyal.

The layout

In order to avoid any disorientation or alienation for new customers, therefore, almost every online sports betting app has the same basic layout. As a result, there’s a very flat learning curve for you if you want to change your app.

The left column or third of the app is typically reserved for a list of available sports. This list is usually organized with the most popular sports first, then alphabetically afterward. The final entry tends to be a link to a complete list of every sport onsite.

The middle of the app is where the sportsbook will display its featured or live bets. These are the betting options that are either time-sensitive or are promoted somehow. Wagers with boosted odds are common to show up in this area.

Finally, the right side of the app is where your betslip resides. As you make your selections, this slip will auto-populate with the complete list of your wagers.

The betslip is also the location of the parlay and cash out features. If you make multiple choices, you will likely be able to select a parlay bet from all the different variants that the app has.

The cash out feature will usually be a button at the bottom of the slip. If one of your wagers meets certain criteria, the button will illuminate and display a payout amount. You can take the money and settle the bet right then, or you can ride it out.

How to bet on Michigan sportsbooks

Of course, not every sportsbook will have exactly the same navigation. But, like their layout design, they have a vested interest in making the process as seamless for new customers as they can.

So, in general, you first select the sport that you want to bet from the column on the left. If you don’t see your preferred event, click the last button that says “A-Z Sports” or something similar.

From there, you will get a list of the wagers that are currently up and running. A simple press of your finger on one of these bets will send it to your betslip.

Once you’ve finished making your choices, look over at your slip. If you don’t like something you’ve chosen, you can remove it from the slip.

Then, designate your bet size. You will only be able to wager up to the amount that’s in your account, so don’t be concerned that you’ll be clicking away your house all of the sudden.

Once everything is set, double-check all the details. Then, hit submit, and you’re good to go.

Keep an eye on that cash out option as the game proceeds, however. It may be worth a slightly smaller payout if you don’t have to sweat out the end of the game to see if you win, or if you’re afraid of a late collapse.

Sports Betting Markets in Michigan

Whether you’re betting online or retail, there will be numerous options for Michiganders in terms of sports to wager. Almost every sport imaginable can be the basis for a bet.

One point of contention for any state governments considering sports betting is how to handle wagering on collegiate events. In the end, Michigan’s law does not prohibit such betting, so you will be able to bet on the Michigan Wolverines, the Michigan State Spartans, or whomever your favorite team is.

Here are some of the sports that we expect in Michigan sportsbooks:

  • Australian-rules football
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Mixed Martial Arts
  • Motor sports
  • Rugby union
  • Soccer
  • Tennis

There is also no prohibition on ancillary or non-sporting events as subjects for betting. So, it’s possible that e-sports, virtual sports, and political elections could be up for wagering in Michigan soon.

Types of Bets at Michigan Sportsbooks

Along with an expansive list of sports on tap, Michigan sportsbooks also offer many different types of wagering. In fact, if you’ve never used an online sportsbook, you’ll be shocked at the number of different types of bets that will be available.

Of particular note is live betting, which is a form of proposition bet that relates to games already in progress. Live betting has revolutionized sports betting in that it has dramatically expanded the number of wagers that a single game or match may host.

It’s not uncommon to see more than one hundred bet offers for a contest. Those bets can include the outcomes of individual plays or other microevents. Needless to say, live betting is usually practiced in online sportsbooks.

Here are the types of bets you can make at Michigan sportsbooks:

  • Point spreads
  • Moneylines
  • Totals (over/under)
  • Futures
  • Propositions
  • Parlays
  • Teasers
  • Round robins

Michigan Sports Betting and the Law

You may be wondering how all of this is possible now. As it turns out, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2019 signature on the Lawful Sports Betting Act opened the door to an influx of sports betting interests in the state.

The signature did not come easy, as Whitmer sparred with legislators over the contents of the bill. However, in the end, the governor decided that allowing sports betting would be a boon to the classroom students and ailing firefighters in the state.

As signed, the bill allowed for several key initiatives. Chief among them was the inclusion of online sports betting, of course. However, there were several other relevant details in the law, including:

  • All 26 casinos (3 commercial, 23 tribal) are able to apply for both retail and online sports betting.
  • The initial fees for application and licensing are $50,000 and $100,000, respectively. The books must renew their licenses annually, at a cost of $50,000.
  • Sports betting gross receipts are taxed at a rate of 8.4%. The three commercial casinos must also pay a 1.5% city tax to Detroit.
  • Unusually, sportsbooks can deduct a portion of their taxes if they give away free play to patrons.
  • The books can only use a single sports betting platform online.
  • Official league data is required for live betting UNLESS the operators can argue to the Michigan Gaming Control Board that data rates make operations unviable.

At the same time that she signed the Lawful Sports Betting Act, Whitmer also signed off on a host of other gambling expansion bills. Notably, Michigan will soon be home to both online casino gambling and online poker play.
